Boxthorn Mulcher
One Pass. Thicket Down.
TMC Cancela mulchers grind boxthorn — thorns, stems, and root crown — from inside the excavator cab. Operator safe. Paddock cleared.
- Processes 15mm to 200mm stems
- Hardox steel deflects 150mm thorns
- Armoured hose routing prevents punctures
- Smothers regrowth and bird-fed seedlings

WEED OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
Why boxthorn demands mulching
Lycium ferocissimum infests 9 million hectares across SA, VIC, NSW, WA, and TAS. Plants reach 5m tall and 6m wide.
Stems carry rigid thorns 20mm on fresh growth, up to 150mm on mature wood. Stems run 15–60mm. Old plants form 80–120mm root crowns.
Birds spread red berries along fences, creeks, and powerlines. One untreated plant becomes a 6m thicket within a decade.

Standard clearing fails
Slashers bounce off rigid stems. Flail mowers wrap on interlocking branches. Bulldozer pushing scatters thorn-laden debris that shreds tyres on follow-up gear. A TMC Cancela mulcher grinds the entire plant — thorns, stems, root crown — into flat mulch in one pass.

150mm thorns. Hidden hazards.
Boxthorn thorns puncture radial tyres and shred unprotected hydraulic hoses within hours. Tracked machines or armoured carriers are non-negotiable.
TMC Cancela builds Hardox steel bodies with armoured hose routing and 4 chain curtains. Heavy-gauge steel deflects thorns that penetrate standard housings. Curtains contain debris before it reaches the carrier.
The excavator-mounted approach is safest. Operator sits metres above the thorn mass. Boom reach places the head into the thicket without driving the carrier through it.

Pest dens and buried hazards
Old thickets harbour rabbit warrens, fox dens, and decades of buried debris — old fencing wire, star pickets, rock piles, collapsed structures.
Walk-around inspection is impossible — the thorns prevent physical access. The excavator boom peels back the canopy layer-by-layer, exposing what lies underneath before the drum contacts ground level.
