Why bracken demands mulching
Pteridium esculentum contains thiaminase and ptaquiloside — toxic to cattle, horses, and sheep. Stock grazing infested paddocks suffer cumulative thiamine deficiency and bladder cancers in long exposures.
The plant spreads from underground rhizomes. Cutting fronds alone provides temporary relief — the rhizome mat regrows within weeks.

Drain the rhizome reserves
Repeated seasonal mulching drains rhizome energy reserves. Each frond cohort the plant rebuilds depletes underground stores. After 2–3 consecutive seasons of timed mulching, rhizome density drops sharply.
Timing — mulch at peak photosynthesis
Bracken stores energy in underground rhizomes between flushes. Mulching at peak frond expansion (late spring–early summer) maximises the energy drain.
