Why gorse demands mulching
Ulex europaeus is a Weed of National Significance across cool-temperate Australia. The plant grows 2–4m tall with rigid 10–25mm spines covering every branch.
Gorse foliage carries volatile oils. Standing infestations are extreme fire hazards — they burn hot, fast, and through containment lines.

Standard equipment cannot survive
Slashers and flail mowers wrap on the interlocking branches. Spines puncture tyres and shred hydraulic hoses. Standard mulchers without armoured housings fail within hours.

Fire load to ground mulch
Standing gorse is high-combustibility fuel. Mulched gorse is low-combustibility ground cover. The same biomass — re-oriented from vertical to horizontal — drops fire risk dramatically.
