Why pecan orchards need mulching
Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) trees produce more pruning waste per hectare than almost any other Australian orchard crop. Wood density runs 600–700 kg/m³.
Pecan scab (Venturia effusa) overwinters on shucks and pruning debris. Each new season inherits the inoculum unless residue is destroyed.

Trucking pecan pruning off-site is cost-prohibitive at modern operation scale. Volumes run 5–10 tonnes per hectare per year.
