CARRYING CAPACITY DROPS 80%
Why rats tail demands mulching
Rats tail grass (Sporobolus species) is the worst pasture weed in coastal QLD and northern NSW. Cattle won't graze the rank tussocks. Carrying capacity drops up to 80% on infested paddocks.
The plant produces masses of fine seed that disperse on stock, vehicles, and equipment. Once established, it persists for decades.

Mulch before seed hardens
Mulching at flowering — before seeds harden — destroys the plant and developing seed at once. The TGS, TGI, and TGH cover broadacre paddocks fast on standard PTO tractors.

Seed bank reduction
Each year of pre-seed-set mulching reduces the soil seed bank. Sporobolus seeds are short-lived (3–5 years) compared to other invasive grasses, so consistent annual mulching makes measurable progress.
The mulch blanket also smothers germinating seedlings on contact.

Oversow for competitive cover
Cleared paddocks support immediate oversowing with competitive sub-tropical pasture species — Setaria, Rhodes grass, signal grass. Aggressive cover denies rats tail seedlings the light and space to recover.
