Why walnut orchards need mulching
Walnut (Juglans regia) wood is hard — 600–700 kg/m³. Annual pruning generates 15mm to 80mm wood. Block renovation and end-of-life removal produces 200–500mm trunks.
Walnut blight (Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis) overwinters on dead branches and pruning waste. Juglone — walnut's natural allelopathic compound — suppresses inter-row cover crops and pasture.
