Why wheat stubble demands mulching
High-yielding wheat crops drop 6–10 t/ha of standing stubble. No-till seeders hair-pin the residue into the seed slot, reducing seed-soil contact and emergence.
Septoria (Zymoseptoria tritici), yellow spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis), and crown rot (Fusarium pseudograminearum) all overwinter on intact straw. Each new wheat or barley crop inherits the inoculum.
