Why wine vineyards need mulching
Australian wine vineyards run 2–3m row spacing on standard cordon and VSP systems. Annual cane pruning generates 1–3 t/ha of woody material between rows.
Cane debris harbours Botrytis cinerea, Eutypa dieback, and powdery mildew. Standing residue carries inoculum into the new growing season.

The TP and TPS pass through 2–3m row spacings without trellis contact. The TOK orchard shredder handles heavier renovation cuts. The same machine processes both inter-row vegetation and pruning canes.
Disease cycle broken
Botrytis sclerotia, Eutypa lesions on dead canes, and powdery mildew chasmothecia all overwinter on cane debris. Mulching destroys the structures each pathogen needs.
